During the winter months from December to April Borovets becomes one of the largest and longest standing ski resorts in the Balkans. While skiing and snowboarding are the most popular activities here during winter, there are plenty of other options to be found.
The ski resort is made up of 23 runs adding up to a total of 58km of pistes. These are broken down into 3 green, 7 blue, 9 red and 4 black and are spread across three different skiable areas. The three areas are: Sitnyakovo-martinovi Baraki, Markudzhik and Yasterbetz. They are all linked together and provide a variety of terrain suitable for all abilities. Borovets is a great resort for groups of mixed abilities as it has something for everyone. It is especially good for beginners due to the exceptional standards at the English speaking ski school, Borosports. Borovets also has night skiing available on the Sitnyakovo-martinovi area located in the resort center, near the Rila hotel.
There are many other activities within Borovets for those who don't want to spend all their time on the piste. Many of the hotels have spa and massage facilities, the Samokov also has a bowling alley, table tennis, pool tables and a mini shooting range. Sight seeing tours of Sofia are provided by most of the tour operators along with snowmobile safaris. If you prefer a more traditional method of transport pick up one of the horse and cart taxis along the main road between the Samokov and the gondola.
